google plusSince the days of Google Buzz, the +1 button has been a mystery to users and content producers alike. It’s different from Facebook’s“Like” button, in that it doesn’t directly share content to a user’s social stream. But the cultivation of a social graph has long been the goal of Google, and its connection to search was likely inevitable.
Google defines the +1 as a feature to help people discover and share relevant content from the people they already know and trust. Users can +1 different types of content, including Google search results, websites, and advertisements. Once users +1 a piece of content, it can be seen on the +1 tab in their Google+ profile, in Google search results, and on websites with a +1 button.
The plot thickened last month when Google launched Search plus Your World. Jack Menzel, director of product management for Google Search, explained that now Google+ users would be able to “search across information that is private and only shared to you, not just the public web.” According to Ian Lurie from the blog Conversation Marketing, in Search plus Your World, search results that received a lot of +1s tend to show up higher in results.
Google has come out and described the purpose of a +1, but hasn’t necessarily explained the direct effect a +1 has on search ranking. Here’s a breakdown of what we currently know.
The +1 has an indirect effect on your site’s search rank. This does not mean the more +1’s a link has, the higher rank it achieves in traditional search results. Take this scenario:
When a Google+ user +1’s a piece of content, he gives it his “stamp of approval.” Then, say one of his connections from Google+ searches for the same or related topic. Because of Search plus Your World, his friend is more likely to click on the same link the original user +1’d (when a signed-in user searches, his Google results may include snippets annotated with the names of connections who have +1′d the content). This is because content recommended by friends and acquaintances is often more relevant than content from strangers, according to Google.
This is also true for users who are not signed in to their Google account when they search. When a user searches for the same phrase, the results might display the total number of +1’s a link has received, which is another validation that it’s a relevant link.

Do you want to improve your search engine optimization? Embracing Google+ should be on your short list of activities.

Experts continue to debate whether Google+ has the power to last beyond Google’s previous attempts at entering the social networking realm. But one thing is clear: Google+ is making its presence known in Google search results now. Here are some ways you can ensure that your Google+ usage will help with your search rankings.

1. Get more Followers
This may go against everything you believe about social media and how it’s not supposed to be a numbers game, but rather a matter of quality versus quantity. When it comes to using Google+ for search ranking benefits, you’ll want quantity in the form of as many followers as possible

2. Set Up Authorship With Your Personal Profile
Google+ now offers a way for you to really stand out in search results by claiming authorship for articles you have written. This is something that is showing up in search results, even when people are not logged into Google+.

3. Directly Connect Your Page
Be sure to directly connect your Google+ page to your website. You can add a simple piece of code to your page that no one will see on your website or you can add a Google+ badge which, as mentioned earlier, can help you get followers for your page.

4.Fill Out Your Information
Last but not least, be sure to fill in the information for your profile and pages completely. Google prioritizes different areas of the profile for both on-page optimization and in search results.

Google and FacebookSearch engine superpower, Google, has started indexing comments made publically on websites, such as Facebook, the Telegraph reports this morning.
Comments made on sites such as Facebook, Disqus and Intense Debate will now show up in Google search results. This means that user presence and consumer ratings will have a direct effect on a websites’ ranking.
This development is down to the web tools that Google uses to index sites are now able to read these comments, which were previously programmed as too complex to be encoded.
On top of this Facebook’s influence is felt beyond its specific url because of services such as Facebook add-ons. This is causing website owners who originally declined using comment add-ons that did not increase search rankings to rethink their decisions.

SEO vs Social Media

SEO vs Social MediaA few years ago the idea of choosing between a search engine optimization (SEO) program for your website, or making social media a top marketing priority would have been easy – nobody was going to locate your business on Google if the site wasn’t optimized.

For companies with a tight marketing budget, improving visibility of a website or a Web page in search engines was a priority. Today, however, a lot has changed.

Google eventually tweaked its algorithms to adopt social media into the search mix back in 2009. Now, pulling the trigger on choosing between an SEO campaign over social media outreach (or vice versa) to beef up your company’s Web profile is a bit more complicated. Search engines are designed to provide the most relevant content among a seemingly endless stream of interconnected pages on the Web. That can’t be fully achieved unless social media tools ─ Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, YouTube, ect. ─ are included in the search mix. After all, much of the Web’s content is shared through these social media sources.

As a business owner keeping an eye on costs, however, you might have a decision to make as to which to employ. (Source: Tim Gray)

SEO

SEO will get you more traffic up front than social media will and even though social media is gaining more and more traction every day, it still doesn’t come close to what a number one ranking can do for your site in terms of raw traffic.

On the other hand, getting top search rankings for high ranking keywords is difficult but not impossible to achieve. Regardless of what people say, it can take months… even years because this is the land where most of the big boys play (major corporations, etc).

Not to mention that this also takes a lot of time (investment) and can cost you a lot of money as well.

Social Media

Social media is free. It’s easy to manage and doesn’t take months before you see results. Social media has a lot of side benefits that go beyond the raw traffic stats. Prominent social media figures build a strong reputation in a space, which often increases their conversion rates because of their reputation.

Likewise, they’re more likely to get invited to speaking engagements, where many profitable business deals can be made. The key to good social media marketing is to provide something your users want, consistently. If that’s a weekly how-to video, then make sure you provide that video every week, without fail.

SEO creates value in attracting people to  your blog or website and Social Media let’s people find you in closed networks where the search engines are not allowed to go, and drive traffic from there to your website.

Advantages of Social Media

  1. Cost-effectiveness. Content can go viral with very little cost.
  2. Contact with consumers. Companies interact socially with their customers.
  3. Drives traffic, generated leads and converses sales
  4. Ability to inform and educate the public about your business
  5. Social media networks can be integrated on websites and blogs

Disadvantages of Social Media

  1. Time consuming. It is very important to dedicate the amount of time necessary to communicate with your audience, a lot of times it is more time consuming that the companies have estimated
  2. Damaged Reputation. Wrong brand strategy can put you in a viral social disadvantage and can hurt your reputation.
  3. Limited Control. Marketers have little control over what people say and how they react to companies’ activities.

Both SEO and Social Media have their pros and cons. However, a company can gain insight on customers’ behaviors and conduct analysis on their attitudes and reaction better through social media. A company can gain more quality customers and affect their decisions better through constant communication that social media tools provide. Lastly, increased traffic through social media is more targeted than through search engine optimization.

An organization should not neglect either of the two tools. On the contrary, it should use both wisely in order to get the best of every tool.

Here is an interesting artilce about SEO vs Social Media…

The terms SEO and Social Media come up a lot in the digital world. But which of the two is more effective in driving business?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a technique that can improve the visibility of your website on organic search. Social Media tools provide businesses the opportunity to interact with customers while at the same time provide them with the information about the company.

Advantages of SEO

  1. Increased online visibility. It can improve results for organic searches
  2. Targeted Traffic. Once you manage to rank your website at the first results for your keywords, the quality of the traffic improves.
  3. Low cost. SEO is more affordable compared to online campaigns such as AdWords.
  4. Long-term results. SEO allows your optimized position to remain as long as you update and keep on improving keywords and other objects on your website.
  5. No impact on aesthetics. The optimization of the website’s visibility can be done without involving changes of feel.

Disadvantages of SEO

  1. Limited control. Your position is dependent on the constantly changing algorithms, therefore you have little control.
  2. Difficult to predict ROI. It is very difficult to predict ROI based only on the results of SEO
  3. Constant improvement. To maintain a position on the first results on search engines, you need continuously to monitor and respond to the new conditions.
  4. Increased Spams. When your website improves its position, the possibility of receiving spam content increases.

Do you have any success stories with SEO?
