In 2004 members of the Southampton Council of Faiths produced a series of six half hour programmes with Meridian TV looking at the six main different faith communities in the city. The programmes were an interesting and an educative insight into the lives of the Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian communities and their daily lives. We will look at each of these during Interfaith week – Today it is the faith of Buddhism – see video here …

A Buddhist is a person who follows the teachings of the Buddha ( Enlightened one) and aims to achieve enlightenment or awakening by following a spiritual and moral path known as the three jewels: Buddha the enlightened teacher and example: Dharma the teaching and practice which lead to liberation: Sangha the spiritual community. Buddhism, like most of the religions of the world, is divided into a number of different traditions or schools but broadly they can be divided between Southern or Theravada schools, and the Northern or Mahayana schools. Southampton Council of Faiths ( SCOF ) was set up in May 2001 to promote understanding between faiths in the city.
